Account

How do I create an account?

Go to getwetpaint.app/auth/register, enter your email address and a password (minimum 12 characters). You'll receive a verification email — click the link to activate your account. The link expires in 24 hours.

I didn't receive my verification email. What do I do?

First, check your spam or junk folder. If it's not there, go to the sign in page, attempt to log in, and click Resend verification email when prompted. If you still don't receive it after a few minutes, contact us at hello@getwetpaint.app.

Can I change my email address?

Email address changes aren't currently supported in-app. Contact us at hello@getwetpaint.app and we'll update it for you.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

On the sign in page, click Forgot password? and enter your email address. A reset link will be emailed to you within a few minutes. The link expires in 1 hour.

Can I use Wet Paint on my phone?

Yes. Wet Paint is a web app that works on mobile browsers. Open getwetpaint.app in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android). For the best experience, add it to your home screen — on iPhone tap the Share button → Add to Home Screen.

How do I delete my account?

Email hello@getwetpaint.app with your request. We'll permanently delete your account and all associated data within 30 days.

Security

Is Wet Paint secure?

Yes. Wet Paint uses HTTPS encryption, hashed passwords (PBKDF2-SHA256), CSRF protection, secure session cookies, and rate limiting on all authentication endpoints. We also support two-factor authentication (TOTP) for additional account security.

What is two-factor authentication and should I enable it?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires a second verification step — a 6-digit code from an authenticator app — when you sign in. It means someone who guesses or steals your password still can't access your account. We strongly recommend enabling it, especially since Wet Paint contains sensitive financial data. Set it up in your Profile.

I lost my phone and can't access my 2FA codes. What do I do?

When you set up 2FA, you were given 8 backup codes. Use one of those to sign in. If you've lost your backup codes too, contact us at hello@getwetpaint.app with your account email and we'll verify your identity and restore access.

Does Wet Paint store my banking password?

No. If you use Open Banking, your bank credentials are entered directly on your bank's secure login page. Wet Paint never sees, stores, or handles your banking username or password. We only receive the transaction data your bank provides after you grant consent.

Budgeting

How do I set up my budget?

Go to Budget Planner in the sidebar. Your budget is organised into categories (like Housing, Food, Transport) and line items within each category. Click a category to expand it, enter monthly amounts for each line item, then click Save. See the User Guide for a full walkthrough.

Can I budget for the whole year at once?

Yes. In Budget Planner, each line item has 12 monthly columns. You can fill in all 12 months at once, or just the months where you expect that expense. Leave other months at $0.

What are the pre-loaded categories based on?

The default budget categories are based on Australian household spending patterns, drawing on CDR (Consumer Data Right) taxonomy standards used by Australian open banking providers. They cover most common Australian household expenses. You can customise them fully from the Categories & Items settings page.

What are Barefoot Buckets?

Barefoot Buckets is a budgeting framework popularised by Scott Pape's The Barefoot Investor. It divides your money into buckets: Blow (daily expenses), Smile (fun money), Fire Extinguisher (debt payoff/savings), and Mojo (emergency fund). Wet Paint's Barefoot Buckets page maps your budget categories to this framework so you can see your spending through that lens. This is a tool only — see our Financial Disclaimer.

Can I manage budgets for multiple years?

Yes. Use the year selector in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar to switch between years. Each year has its own independent budget. Transactions are also filtered by year.

Transactions

How do I import transactions?

You can import transactions two ways:

  • CSV Import: Download a CSV from your bank's internet banking and upload it in the CSV Import page
  • Open Banking: Connect your bank account directly for automatic transaction retrieval

See the User Guide for step-by-step instructions.

My CSV won't upload. What format does it need to be in?

Wet Paint accepts CSV files with common Australian bank column formats. The file must:

  • Be a .csv file (not Excel .xlsx)
  • Have a header row
  • Include columns for date, description, and either debit/credit or a single amount column

If your bank exports in Excel format, open it in Excel or Numbers and save as CSV first. If you're still having trouble, email us the file (with sensitive details removed) at hello@getwetpaint.app.

What is TX Mapping?

TX Mapping lets you create rules that automatically assign transaction descriptions to budget line items when you import. For example, a rule matching "WOOLWORTHS" will automatically categorise any Woolworths transaction to Groceries & Supermarket. Go to TX Mapping in the sidebar to set up your rules.

Can I edit or delete a transaction?

Transaction editing is not currently available in the app. If you need a transaction removed, contact us at hello@getwetpaint.app. You can re-import corrected data — duplicate transactions with the same date, description, and amount are automatically detected.

What is AI categorisation?

When enabled by the administrator, you can use the AI Categorise button on the import page to automatically suggest categories for uncategorised transactions. This uses Anthropic's Claude AI. Transaction descriptions are sent to Anthropic's API for processing — no other personal data is sent. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Open Banking

What is Open Banking?

Open Banking is an Australian Government initiative (Consumer Data Right, or CDR) that lets you securely share your bank transaction data with accredited third-party apps. Wet Paint uses Basiq (an ASIC-accredited CDR provider) to connect to your bank. You control the consent and can revoke it at any time.

Which banks are supported?

Basiq supports the major Australian banks including CommBank, ANZ, NAB, Westpac, ING, Macquarie, Bendigo Bank, Bank of Queensland, and many others. The full list of supported institutions is shown when you go through the connection process.

Is Open Banking safe?

Yes. Open Banking under the CDR framework is governed by ASIC and the ACCC. You never share your banking password with Wet Paint — you log in directly on your bank's secure page and grant read-only access to your transaction history. You can revoke access at any time from within Wet Paint or directly from your bank.

How do I disconnect my bank?

Go to Open Banking in the sidebar and click Disconnect. This revokes the connection. Your previously imported transactions remain in Wet Paint. You can also revoke consent directly from your bank's internet banking portal.

Your Data

Who can see my financial data?

Only you. Your data is stored in a private database linked to your account. Wet Paint staff have administrative database access for maintenance purposes only and are bound by our Privacy Policy. We do not share your financial data with any third parties for advertising or analytics purposes.

Can I export my data?

Data export is not yet available as a self-service feature. Contact hello@getwetpaint.app to request a copy of your data. We'll provide it in a readable format within 30 days, in accordance with your rights under the Privacy Act 1988.

Where is my data stored?

Your data is stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on Railway's infrastructure. Railway's servers are located in the United States. For more information, see our Privacy Policy — specifically Section 5 on overseas disclosure.

Is Wet Paint financial advice?

No. Wet Paint is a budgeting tool. Nothing in the app constitutes financial advice. We do not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). Please read our Financial Disclaimer for the full detail.
